How to Use Epoxy Resin for Tumblers
Setup – Find a well ventilated, dust-free area to set up your resin pour. The temperature should also be mild (in the 70s or 80s) for the best results. Lay down a plastic drop cloth to protect your table and/or floor. You should also have rubber gloves, protective eyewear, paper towels, mixing sticks (wood and plastic work well), plastic cups for mixing, measuring cups (optional), and your prepared mold (optional), a foam brush (for table coatings only) and lacquer thinner (for cleanup).
Step 1 – First, you will need to figure out roughly how much resin you will need for your ENTIRE project including all of the different colors if applicable. Keep in mind; it’s always better to have a little extra resin leftover than it is to have to mix up another batch of it mid-project.
Step 2 – Pour equal parts resin and hardener into two cups and then pour those two cups into a third mixing cup. It is extremely important that you mix thoroughly in this cup, making sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the cup as you stir. Mix for 3 to 5 minutes until there are no “streaks” left in the resin.
Step 3 – You can either pour this resin as-is for a clear finish or you can mix in any color or glow pigments at this time. If you are using more than one color, pour the clear resin from the mixing cup into new cups, one for each color, and then stir in your pigments.
Step 4 – From here you should quickly pour your resin into your mold, onto your tumbler. Cover your work with a drop cloth, plastic bin, cardboard box, etc. to keep dust off of it. Come back in 5 minutes to check for air bubbles and if necessary, use a torch or heat gun on low in a sweeping motion about 8 inches from the resin to pop the bubbles. For smaller castings, bubbles can be popped with a toothpick.
Step 5 – Your finished casting can be removed from the mold after 24 hours.
